Civil suit against Keyshia Cole ends with default judgment

Georgia fans of the singer Keyshia Cole or the rapper Birdman may have heard about the incident that occurred at his apartment in September 2014. At the time, Cole and Birdman were in a relationship, and Cole saw a woman, Sabrina Mercadel, at Birdman's apartment. Cole was taken into custody after she attacked the woman and scratched her face.

Mercadel, who had worked for Cash Records for a long time, pressed charges. She also filed a lawsuit against Cole asking for punitive damages for premises liability, negligence, intentional infliction of emotional distress and battery. Cole did not show up for court, so there was a default judgment. Cole has been ordered to pay Mercadel more than $100,000.

Cole had other legal troubles as well. After the 2014 incident, police discovered there was a warrant for her from 2002 in connection with a DUI. That carried a possible sentence of 30 days in jail.

A person may file a lawsuit against another person responsible for that person's injury whether or not the injury is deliberate. While a person may file a civil lawsuit in association with a criminal case, as was the case here, such a lawsuit could also be filed if preventable accidents occur as a result of a person's negligence. For example, if a person owns a property with stairs on it, fails to maintain those stairs, and someone falls through the stairs, the owner could be liable. People who are injured in accidents may want to talk to an attorney about their rights. Compensation could be important in covering medical expenses, lost income during recovery from the accident and other costs.
