Avoiding accidents on the escalator

Georgia residents can generally feel confident that they are safe while riding an escalator. However, it is possible to get into an accident by not paying attention to the escalator itself or other riders. To get onto the escalator safely, riders should first look to see which direction it is going. Parents should have a firm grip on their child's hand prior to taking the first step. The other hand should be kept free to grip the guardrail.

When a person reaches his or her destination, it is important to get off in a prompt and smooth manner. Hesitating could cause a person to slip or trip as the escalator itself will keep moving. It is also important to remain aware of other passengers who may be trying to exit at the same time. While on the escalator, it is important to remain aware of loose clothing or other objects that could get caught in the steps.

Individuals are advised not to bring wheelchairs, scooters or other motorized equipment on the escalator with them. At all times, riders should remain standing on the steps. No one should be sitting on the steps or riding on the handrail. Finally, everyone should be facing forward, and riders should be as close to the center of the structure as possible.

Those who are hurt in what could be considered preventable accidents may be allowed to seek compensation or other relief. Compensation may help to pay medical bills or other costs related to an accident. An escalator manufacturer could be liable for failing to install it correctly or for creating a defective product. The owner of the property where the accident happened could also be liable for creating a dangerous condition that a person didn't know about or wasn't remedied.
