How to avoid a fall

On Behalf of | Sep 27, 2018 | Slip & Fall Accidents

A slippery floor may result in a person falling while at a friend’s house or while walking in an office building. It is also possible to trip on stairs or slip on a parking lot that hasn’t been cleared of ice and snow. Falls can be especially dangerous because they can happen at any time and to any person regardless of what they are doing.

However, there are ways to mitigate the risk of slipping and falling. For instance, wearing sneakers or shoes that have adequate grip can make it easier to maintain balance on a wet or greasy floor. If a person notices that there is water or another liquid on the floor, he or she should take steps to clean the spill or notify someone about it.

It is also a good idea for a person to remain aware of his or her surroundings. This means not paying attention to a text message or whatever else may be on a smartphone screen. Individuals should stay alert for cords, bunched carpet or other debris that may cause hazards when walking to the kitchen or anywhere else on a person’s property. It may also be helpful to straighten out that carpet or pick up anything that could cause another person to trip, slip or fall.

If dangerous conditions exist on a property, the owner is generally required to mitigate them or warn others of their presence. If this doesn’t happen, it may be possible to take legal action against a homeowner or other property owner if the dangerous condition leads to a fall. Compensation may be available to help pay an injured victim’s medical bills as well as reimburse an injured victim for lost wages or lost future earnings.
