A Georgia man accused of killing his wife with a gun before turning the weapon on himself was reportedly charged with murder and other associated offenses on May 9. Authorities said the incident occurred at about 5:40 a.m. at the man’s home on Bridge Walk Drive in Lawrenceville the previous day.
Police also stated that the man shot into a bedroom that was occupied by family members before shooting himself. None of the occupants suffered injuries. The man was taken to Gwinnett Medical Center, where he was reported to be in critical, but stable, condition.
Once the man is released from the hospital, authorities said that he will be taken directly to Gwinnett County Jail. Due to the severity of the man’s injuries, however, it is not known when this will be. Local police noted that they had been called to the home just two days before the shooting incident after domestic disputes were reported.
If a person kills a family member in an accident or domestic abuse incident, they will likely face criminal charges. However, the family members may also have the opportunity to file a wrongful death claim against the person who caused the death. Unlike the criminal case, a wrongful death claim must be brought by the family. While this type of lawsuit cannot result in incarceration, family members who suffered damages due to the death can seek financial compensation for their loss. A wrongful death attorney may act as an advocate for the family members and assist with the litigation process.
