Estate of Bobbi Kristina Brown wins wrongful death suit

A Georgia jury in Fulton County will have a chance to decide the size of settlement owed the estate of Bobbi Kristina Brown by her boyfriend. Brown, the daughter of the late singer Whitney Houston, died in July 2015 after being found unconscious in a bathtub on Jan. 31, 2015. The administrator of the young woman's estate filed a lawsuit alleging that Brown's boyfriend bore responsibility for the death. Because of his repeated failures to respond to the lawsuit by court deadlines, a judge from Fulton County Superior Court declared the plaintiff the winner by default.

The death certificate issued for Brown stated that the cause of death was undetermined. The autopsy revealed the presence of prescription drugs, alcohol, cocaine and morphine within the woman's body, but the medical examiner could not conclude whether the death was a suicide, accident or homicide.

Although the Fulton County district attorney investigated Brown's death, no criminal charges were made. Brown's boyfriend continues to have legal representation for criminal matters, but he did not have an attorney on record for the civil lawsuit against him.

A person who believes that the negligence or hostility of a person or organization led to a family member's death could talk to an attorney about filing a wrongful death lawsuit. An attorney could inform the person about the burdens of proof that need to be met in order to potentially win a judgment against the defendant. Court paperwork could be prepared by an attorney, who might also represent the victim's family during a trial.
