Lawsuit filed against USTA by tennis star for injuries

Tennis lovers in Georgia may be interested in a recent lawsuit filed by Canadian tennis star Eugenie Bouchard against the United States Tennis Association. Ms. Bouchard filed the civil lawsuit after she slipped and fell in a physiotherapy room, hitting her head and suffering a concussion.

According to court documents filed in the case, Ms. Bouchard had finished a mixed-doubles tennis match at the U.S. Open in Queens at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. She then went to the locker room, in which the physiotherapy room is located. Her complaint details how there was a foreign substance or spill of some type on top of the tiled floor in the room. Ms. Bouchard allegedly slipped on it, striking her head on the floor and suffering her concussion.

Previously ranked number five, Ms. Bouchard’s rankings have reportedly fallen since the incident. She indicates in her complaint that she has suffered both dropping ranks and a corresponding decrease in income since her fall. Her allegations include that the USTA failed to maintain and repair the floor’s surface appropriately to prevent falls like hers. Ms. Bouchard’s lawsuit was filed on Oct. 14 in Brooklyn.

An owner of property or the company in charge of maintaining the premises may in some cases be held responsible for an injury that results from their failure to correct a dangerous condition. They owe differing duties of care depending on the reason for a person’s being on their property. A person who is injured in a slip-and-fall or similar type of accident may want to have the assistance of an attorney when seeking compensation for the losses that have been incurred.
