Negligence leads to $16 million settlement for woman

On Behalf of | Feb 14, 2014 | Negligent Maintenance

It may be hard for many people to believe, but a slip-and-fall accident can lead to serious injury or even death.

Our Atlanta readers may be familiar with the subway system in New York City, including how dangerous it can be at times. A Bronx woman was recently awarded $16 million as a result of a slip on subway stairs that left her injured and unable to communicate.

The 69-year-old woman suffered a brain injury when she fell on the landing of the Graham Ave. L subway station in 2008. It was argued that the woman was unable to see a defect on the ground, which led to her tripping, falling and hitting her head as she fell down the stairs. According to court records, she was immediately taken to Woodhull Hospital where she was treated for a broken hip, as well as bleeding in the brain.

The woman’s family filed a lawsuit against the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s NYC Transit division one year after the accident. However, it was not until recently that her case was finally heard in court.

With the money the family won, they will now be able to take care of the woman at home, giving her the love and attention she requires.

This type of dangerous property is not something that many people are aware of, but it can lead to serious injury, such as was the case with this accident. Being injured in this type of accident can be devastating, but there are legal options available for seeking compensation. An experienced premises liability attorney can be a valuable asset in such cases.
