Dangerous property in stadium fall similar to Georgia deaths

On Behalf of | Sep 12, 2013 | Premises Liability

In an incident becoming all too familiar to Atlanta sports fans, a fan died after falling off of a walkway at Candlestick Park in San Francisco during the NFL football game between the 49ers and the Green Bay Packers on Sept. 8. The man fell from a possible dangerous property feature in the elevated walkway. During a recent year in Atlanta, three people have died at the city’s stadiums. The latest was a baseball fan who died after falling 85 feet from a fourth-level railing at Turner Field.

San Francisco police said that several witnesses saw the man fall to his death from an elevated walkway that encircles the stadium. The man fell just before kickoff, and witnesses said he seemed intoxicated before he fell. Off-duty medical personnel and police rendered first aid until an ambulance could get there, but the man died from his injuries. It was not immediately known how far the man, who appeared to be in his 30s, had fallen.

The Institute Study of Sports Incidents reported that from the period 2003-2013, more than two dozen people have fallen at stadiums across the country. In addition to the San Francisco and Atlanta cases, a Denver Broncos fan was hurt when he fell 10 feet from an escalator during a preseason game.

Stadiums and other public buildings take out premises liability insurance to cover their risk from a dangerous property. The assistance an Atlanta attorney can provide may be of assistance to those hurt on unsafe premises such as a grocery store, apartment complex or shopping center. Such an attorney may be able arrange financial compensation for damages, such as medical expenses, incurred following an incident involving a site’s hazardous conditions.
