Inadequate security to blame for mass Georgia shooting?

On Behalf of | Nov 13, 2012 | Inadequate Security

After seven people were injured when a gunman opened fire at a crowded fair, some may wonder if inadequate security played a role in the injuries. The attack took place in a suburban area of Savannah, Georgia, at the Coastal Empire Fair.

The shooting began at approximately at 10:40 p.m., nearly an hour before the fair was scheduled to close for the evening. All of the victims were taken to area hospitals for treatment and one victim underwent surgery. The injuries were not considered to be life-threatening.

Witnesses stated that the gunman was wearing a dark jumpsuit, but the police investigation continued. Police have not ruled out the possibility that another gunman may have been involved in the shootings of six teenagers and one 36-year-old woman. Police have not apprehended the person who committed the crime and are investigating possible motives for the shooting.

When victims are injured at a commercial property, they may have a premises liability claim if they can prove that the property owner demonstrated negligence by having inadequate security for the property. In this case, even if victims are attacked by third parties, the security firm may be expected to provide protection to the customers by employing additional security guards if they were aware of a need for extra security. In order to prevail with a premises liability claim, the victim must prove that the property owner exposed customers to an unreasonable risk of harm. Victims in cases like this sometimes retain personal injury attorneys to protect their rights and potentially pursue damages against negligent parties.
