Person dies after fair ride malfunctions

On Behalf of | Aug 1, 2017 | Premises Liability

Georgia residents that enjoy fairs might have heard a pendulum ride at a state fair in Ohio stopped working correctly, and some riders were flung from the ride. An 18-year-old man was killed in the July 26 accident. Seven other victims were injured in the accident, and three were in critical condition.

The governor of the state announced that an investigation of the accident was underway. Nonetheless, the chief safety inspector for the Department of Agriculture claimed that the ride had been inspected up to four times before the accident occurred. The inspector went on to say that he and his team do not speed through their inspections, and that the ride had been signed off on.

Video of the accident shows that some seats on the ride detached and broke away from the mechanism. It also showed that people separated from their seats and flew high in the air. Hospital staff who reviewed the video stated that the victims were likely up to 30 feet high in the air when they were flung at high speeds and with high energy from the ride. A witness reported that as the seats and people began separating from the ride, the operator of the machine pressed a button that stopped the ride immediately, which led to more people separating from the ride.

People who are injured because a ride or activity was not properly maintained or inspected might seek compensation for their medical expenses and other losses through a lawsuit filed with the assistance of an attorney. Property owners generally have a duty to their guests to keep their premises free from hazards.
