Former Georgia Tech athlete hit with wrongful death suit

On Behalf of | Jan 31, 2014 | Wrongful Death

A former basketball player for Georgia Tech and the Los Angeles Lakers is now facing a wrongful death lawsuit. The suit stems from a 2011 incident in which a 22-year-old mother of four was shot to death in Atlanta. The man is also facing criminal murder charges, as well as a recent drug arrest. The mother of the murder victim filed the complaint in an attempt to provide for the woman’s children.

The incident in question occurred on August 19, 2011 in southeast Atlanta. According to police, the young mother was gunned down with a high-caliber rifle. Prosecutors stated that the former basketball player was the gunman. He was eventually charged with aggravated assault, criminal gang activity and murder. The prosecution alleged that the man was retaliating against a member of a rival gang who had robbed him.

In September of 2011, a judge in Fulton County released the man after his family and friends provided a large show of support. The bond was $230,000. The next month, however, he was accused of attempting to intimidate the assistant district attorney for Fulton County. The judge responded by imposing a curfew from 7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. The attorney for the dead woman’s mother stated that he will attempt to get the civil case heard before the murder trial. The man’s attorney states that the defendant is “absolutely not guilty.”

The attorney for the plaintiff acknowledged that the man likely does not have the assets to satisfy the requests made in the complaint. However, regardless of the amount of money the man might be able to provide if found liable, the victim’s mother still has every right to file the suit. Any opportunity to help surviving children in cases such as these should be examined.
