Mall shooting grabs attention of nation, kills 3

A mall shooting made headlines in Georgia and across the nation when three people were killed in Maryland on Jan. 25. The shooter himself was among those who died. Authorities claim that they found additional ammunition on the shooter along with two explosive devices among his possessions.

1 killed in birthday balcony collapse

A 22-year-old man died and two women were seriously injured when they stepped outside onto a balcony to smoke during a birthday party and the balcony collapsed on Jan. 11. The building is more than 100 years old, and Atlanta residents who live in old buildings may not be aware that the same dangers may exist for them. The Philadelphia apartment building where the accident occurred is on the National Register for Historic Places.

Questions still exist in gym mat death of Georgia teenager

Although a year has lapsed since the death of a 17-year-old student, the boy's parents continue to seek answers. The death, classified as an accident, was discovered Jan. 11, 2013, as students completed a survey in their school's gym. The boy's body was discovered in the center hole of a gym mat when his feet were noticed. A teacher indicated in a statement that he grabbed one of the boy's ankles in hope of a response but that the boy was lifeless. While the death has been determined by authorities to be accidental, the boy's family believes that it is a case of wrongful death.

Driver turns himself in after fatal hit-and-run in Georgia

A 22-year-old man thought to be responsible for a fatal hit-and-run accident in Marietta has reportedly turned himself in to authorities. Three days after the accident, the driver turned himself in to Marietta Police Investigators before being transported to Cobb County Jail. The man is expected to be charged with 2nd degree vehicular homicide and felony hit and run.
